What is Ashtanga Full/Short/self practice ? What are Pranayama and  Yoga Nidra?

Ashtanga full primary series class details

Ashtanga is a physically and mentally demanding form of yoga requiring commitment an open mind and a sense of humour.

The class will cover the Primary Series. Modifications are always available and you will be encouraged to listen to your body, honour the principle of Ahimsa and take them as required. This class will be ideal for you if you already practice vinyasa flow and are looking to take a step up towards a more devotional experience and home practice.

Although Ashtanga is challenging it is good fun and ideally suited to a home practice as it is a set series of postures – and therefore easier to maintain.
I offer both a class pass and drop in price for this class. Drop in at £12 or pay £50 for a 5 class pass to be used within 6 weeks.

To find out more or to book a class, call me on 07803 586161 or get in touch via my contact page.

Ashtanga short form primary class details

The class will cover a shortened form of the Primary Series.

The class is ideal for you if you already practice yoga or have a reasonable level of fitness and are curious about suitable yoga practice. It will also be ideal for you if you are unable to make my full Primary Series Class on a Sunday at Wickham or if you are time-poor.

What is Vinyasa Flow?

Vinyasa flow is a style of yoga where we flow through the practice linking movement with the breath.

Each class has a theme which I introduce at the start and then weave into the class. All classes will have a warmup, sun salutations, standing and seated postures, a cool-down sequence, meditation, pranayama [breathwork] and relaxation. The exact content speed and level of difficulty will vary with the class and the theme. Generally speaking however the class is low- medium intensity, occasionally high.

Pranayama and Yoga Nidra class details

I do not currently have a regular home for these classes – please contact me on 07803 586161 or get in touch via my contact page for further information, like my FaceBook page – Michelle Higgins Yoga, or sign up to my email updates.

Ashtanga self Practice ( Mysore ) class details

I run Self Practice sessions from time to time – usually in Southampton and usually on a Saturday. I do not list these sessions here but do put them on my Facebook Page – Michelle Higgins Yoga. If you would like to be kept up to date as to when the next session is please like / follow my page.

Self-practice is the traditional way of teaching and practising Ashtanga and is often called Mysore style – after the city in India where it was developed by Pattabhi Jois.

It has been described as having a 121 in a group setting as the teacher spends time with each student offering guidance, support and assistance but the student is under no pressure to move at the same speed as the rest of the class.

Such a method can seem daunting when one is used to being instructed and led in a class but it is absolutely the best way to learn the series and to give the confidence to establish and maintain a home Ashtanga practice. It is also an incredibly supportive environment in which to practice poses.

This session is open to anyone familiar with the Ashtanga Primary Series up to at least Navasana ( boat ). You do not need to be able to do all the postures, know their names or have memorized the series. You do however need to be able to work through them from either a “ cheat sheet “ or a book up to where you are at without being led by a teacher.

Please call me on 07803 586161 or email on info@michellehigginsyoga.co.uk for further information or for booking/payment details. Please check my FAQs for info re my cancellation/refund policy.

What is Beginners Yoga?

A beginners yoga class follows the same structure as a Vinyasa Flow class but at a slower pace. Some of the more challenging poses are removed. There is generally a longer meditation and relaxation. The class is generally low intensity, occasionally medium.
