One of the issues raised the most at class is that of neck, shoulder and back pain and stiffness.  In todays world we spend so much time hunched over desks , computers , phones , tablets etc that we are not getting the exercise we need in the neck, shoulders and back – and we are becoming stiff , hunched and in pain.

We shall also practice  exercises and postures to relieve tension  before going on to yoga postures to strengthen these areas and to protect them. Introduction to Ashtanga Primary Series Self Practice ( mysore ) Workshop

Date of next workshop:  18th May 2019
Location of next workshop: : Portswood Residents Gardens Pavillion - #see below for details
Cost: £20
Duration: 2 hours
Time: 2-4
Booking info: This workshop will only run if 4 people book and pay by 10 May 2019

Self practice is the traditional way of teaching and practising Ashtanga and is often called Mysore style – after the city in India where it was developped by Pattabhi Jois
In this workshop we shall look at the history to Ashtanga and the Mysore style of teaching before moving on to a full Mysore class.

Traditionally students would work their own way through the series at their own speed spending time working on postures that they either found difficult or were new to them .
It has been described as  having a 121 in a group setting as the teacher spends time with each student offering guidance , support and assistance but the student is under no pressure to  move at the same speed as the rest of the class.

Such a method can seem daunting when one is used to being instructed and led in a class but it is absolutely the best way to learn the series and to give confidence to establish and maintain a home Ashtanga practice . It is also an incredibly supportive environment in which to practice poses.

This workshop is open to anyone familiar with the Ashtanga Primary Series up to at least Navasana ( boat ) . You do not need to be able to do all the postures, know their names or have memorized the series .

You do however need to be able to work  through them from either a “ cheat sheet “ or a book up to where you are at without being led by a teacher.

If the workshop proves popular I will run regular Mysore style classes in the future.

#Portswood Residents Gardens Pavillion is opposite 15 Abbotts Way – walk down the gravel path , through the gate, veer right and the Pavillion is on the right.

No prior knowledge of yoga is required but would be useful.

Demystifying The PSOAS

Date of next workshop:  12th October 2019
Location of next workshop: : The Yoga Shed Wickham , behind Pages newsagents
Cost: £20
Duration: 2 hours
Time: 10.30-12.30
Booking info: This workshop will only run if 3 people have booked and paid by 2nd October 2019

The psoas is a unique group of muscles key to our physical , emotional and spiritual well being.

Physically  it joins our  top half to our  bottom half and  plays important roles in our breathing , sitting , walking and movement generally . Unfortunately  our sedentary lifestyle tightens the psoas causing  problems such as lower back pain.

Emotionally  its our fight or flight muscle . If we sense we are in danger our instinct is to curl up so we protect our vital organs  - it’s the psoas that curls us up. This activates our sympathetic  (“ fight or flight “ ) nervous system  which produces stress hormones , quickens our heart rate and  makes our breathing shallow putting us into a state of stress. This leaves us at more risk of heart attacks and other serious medical conditions.

Spiritually  the psoas spans the lower 3 chakras – muladhara , svadisthana  and manipura. Chakras connected to our grounding , basic needs , digestion and fire / energy .
In this workshop we shall be looking at yoga exercises to tone and relax the  psoas to improve our wellbeing . We shall look at both a physical – asana – practice and also other yogic techniques .

The cost includes a hand out which will be emailed out to participants after the workshop.

No prior knowledge of yoga is required but would be useful.

Winter Wellness Workshop

Date of next workshop:  9th November 2019
Location of next workshop: : The Yoga Shed Wickham , behind Pages newsagents
Cost: £20
Duration: 2 hours
Time: 10.30-12.30
Booking info: This workshop will only run if 3 people have booked and paid by 31 October 2019

This time of the year as the days get shorter and the weather starts to close  we hurtle towards Christmas and its associated over indulgence and  physical and mental stress . People start to feel weakened catching  colds , bugs and viruses and can feel stressed and run down thus weakening the immune system further and increasing stress levels .

In this workshop we shall look at the effect of stress on the immune system , the body and the mind. We shall look at  yoga practices  such as asanas ( postures ), pranayama ( breathing exercises ) and meditation to calm ,  improve digestion,  detox  and to  free up those areas of the body where we hold physical and emotional stress and tension especially at this time of year.

Take this  opportunity to take time out for yourself and to learn how to boost your immune system to prepare for winter. This workshop is utterly practical and includes a handout which will be emailed to participants after the workshop.

No prior knowledge of yoga is required but would be useful.

The Vagus nerve – the most important nerve you didn’t know you had

Date of next workshop:  23rd November 2019
Location of next workshop: Portswood Residents Gardens Pavillion
Cost: £20
Duration: 2 hours
Time: 2-4
Booking info: This workshop will only run if 3 people book and pay by 14th November 2019

The vagus nerve is the longest nerve in the body yet many of us have never heard of it and have no idea how important it is. The nerve  starts at 10th cranial nerve at  base of skull and travels all way down the body connecting all our major organs with the brain.

It is like a super highway sending messages back and forth to the brain and forms part of our parasympathetic nervous system – the “rest digest “ rather than the “ fight or flight “.
If vagal tone is good we  tend to be more resilient to stress,  recover better from illnesses and are generally more positive.

If it is poor we find ourselves  in a continual fight or flight situation  and are  more prone to stress , physical issues with heart  and digestive system , stress and  depression. We get caught in a stress loop. A vicious circle.

In this workshop we shall look at the science. We shall then practice  asanas to work on these areas to improve vagal tone. There will be flowing sequences to warm up the body , strengthen muscles and  stretch connective fibres thus increasing blood flow to organs. There will be calming  inversions which are  good for blood pressure as head is below heart  and  energizing backbends to open the heart.

We shall also look at  Pranayama- breathing exercises ,  and meditation –in particular the  loving kindness meditation – borrowed from the Buddhist tradition.

Please call me on 07803 586161 or email on info@michellehigginsyoga.co.uk for further information or for booking / payment details.

Pranayama Workshops

Duration: 2 hours per workshop

Healing is every breath.” Thich Nhat Hanh

“Prana “ means “  life energy  “ and “ayama “means to draw out. Together  they mean “ the regulation of breath through certain techniques and exercises “. Pranayama is  the 4th limb of yoga coming after yamas , niyamas and asana and before pratyahara, dharana, dhiyana and Samadhi.

So why should we practice it ?
The breath supports every activity we do – whether its playing a sport , giving a talk , appreciating art or music or cooking a meal  . Inhaling  is the first thing we do when we are born and exhaling is the last thing we do before we die. Breathing is part of the autonomic nervous system and is the only part of that we can really control. Yoga practitioners have been found to be able to decrease blood pressure , reduce oxygen consumption , slow down the breath and reduce the production of stress hormones.

During the course of a day – the brain changes the nostril it prefers  every  hour or so. The right brain hemisphere which is more holistic and feminine is powered by left nostril – the  Ida Nadi and the left brain hemisphere is powered by right nostril – Pingala –which is more analytical and masculine.

So if we want to be nurturing or for example appreciate art works or music or practice yoga we need to  work on Ida nadi. If we need to be more analytical – maybe we are coming up to an important business meeting , giving a talk or carrying out physical tasks we need to work on the Pingala nadi.

Pranayama has also been shown to reduce stress and anxiousness  ,increase energy levels and improve physical well being.

During this 2 x 2 hour workshop course we shall look in more detail at the practice of Pranayama. We shall start with breathing waves and then move on to various Pranayama techniques such as Ujjayi – victorious breath , Nadi Shodhana – alternate nostril breathjing   , Kapalabhati – shining skull and Brahmari – humming bee. We shall also look at the most suitable postures for practicing Pranayama and some warm up exercises to open the hips and to prepare the body.

These workshops will give you the tools to establish your own Pranayama practice and learn how to regulate your breath leaving you energized , refreshed and with reduced stress and anxiety.

I have been practising Pranayama for years and recently studied the subject under the guidance of Gregor Maehle a world renowned Ashtanga , Pranayama and yogic meditation  teacher. My fascination with the breath continues and I am always seeking out new opportunities to learn.

The costs includes emailed handouts after each session

Please note. If you have any long term health condition then please contact me before booking as the course may not be suitable for you.

Integrating the 8 limbs of yoga into an asana practice and your life

Date of next workshop: TBA
Location of next workshop: The Yoga Shed Wickham ( behind Pages newsagents Wickham Square ) PO17 5JN
Cost: £25
Duration: 2.5 hours
Booking info: TBA

Over 2.5 hours we shall look at the 8 limbs of yoga. Yoga not just throwing some shapes on the mat – yoga is a life style and the 8 limbs were set out in the Yoga Sutras written by a sage called  Patanjali over 5000 years ago. However as an oral tradition it is likely they existed way before then. They have been likened to a  set of Russian dolls – all interlinked but each contains  elements of  the others – they are  layers of the same thing.

The 8 limbs are:

  1. Yamas – today – behaviours – ahimsa – non harming , satya – truthfulness , asteya – non stealing , brahmacharya – moderation and aparigraha – non stealing
  2. Niyamas – internal observances / self discipline – saucha – cleanliness , santosha – contentment , tapas – the fire inside – your motivation , svadhyaya- self study and isvara pranidhana – surrender to a higher being / what you cannot control
  3. Asana – postures – all familiar with
  4. Pranayama – breathing exercises – such as equal , nadi shodana – alternate nostril and  kappalbhati -shining skull
  5. Pratyahara – withdrawal of senses inwards
  6. Dharana – concentration
  7. Dhyana – uninterrupted flow of consciousness – a  keen awareness  without specific focus  and
  8. Samadhi – what we all aspire to – peace –the  feeling we get in savasana after practice

We shall start with a talk about the 8 limbs and follow that with a group discussion before moving on to a physical practice.

Please call me on 07803 586161 or email on info@michellehigginsyoga.co.uk for further information or for booking / payment details.

Date of next playshop:  TBA
Location of next workshop: Merryoak Community Centre Acacia Rd Southampton SO19 7JY
Cost: £20
Duration: 2 hours
Booking info: This event will only run if 3 people have booked and paid by TBA

If there is one type of yoga pose which polarizes practitioners opinion its arm balances. You either love them or you hate them or you fear them – or all three ! Often this is due to there never being enough time in a 1 or 1.5 hour flow to take it slow, to break the poses down and just well PLAY.
In this 2 hour playshop we shall look at:

  1. The muscles we need to work and exercises to strengthen and release them
  2. The role of the bandhas ( energy locks in the body – in particular mulabandha and uddiyana bandha )
  3. The role of self confidence and the fear of falling
  4. Various arm balances and their modifications such as   bakasana ( crow ), parsva bakanasana ( side crow ), Bhujapidasana ( arm pressure pose ),  tittibhasana ( firefly ), eka hasta bhujasana ( one hand over arm balance ) adho mukha svanasana ( down dog ), chaturanga dandasana ( 4 limbed staff pose ) and vasisthasana ( plank and side plank ) – yes they’re arm balances too !

Yoga Retreats

A journey  through the chakras day retreat with Michelle Higgins

Date :  6th June 2019
Location of next retreat: The Yoga Shed Wickham
Time : 10.30 - 4.30
Cost: £65 ( £60 early bird by 6 April 2019 )
Duration: 6 hours
Booking info: This event will only run if 3 people have booked and paid by 6th May 2019

Join Michelle for a blissful day retreat journeying through the chakras in the delightful setting of the Yoga Shed Wickham.

We all know that we have a physical body but we also have a subtle body – the yogic body – which we cannot see . Blood circulates through our physical body through veins and arteries .whilst Prana ( energy ) circulates through the subtle body through nadis ( energy channels ).

These nadis cross at various points called chakras – or energy centres- which regulate the flow of prana. There are 7 main chakras in the human body– Muladhara , Svadisthana , Manipura , Anahata , Vishuddha , Ajna and Sahasrara . Each chakra is related to specific organs or bodily functions and the 5 elements of earth , water , fire , air and ether . If these centres are blocked or unbalanced we can suffer illness and dis ease in these areas as the prana cannot flow freely

The day will begin with an introduction to the chakra system and its relevance to yoga . We shall continue with a yoga practice to activate and balance the 7 chakras using yoga asana and other yogic techniques. The day will end with a blissful chakra meditation.

There will also be an opportunity for discussion and to browse a selection of relevant books.

Teas and coffee are provided. Lunch is not provided but you are welcome to bring your own to eat in the studio or garden. Alternatively you can visit one of the many cafes and eateries in the village.

Please check my FAQs for info re my cancellation / refund policy

Please note that this retreat will only run if 4 people book and pay by 6 May 2019
